Throughout the history of debate on art museum, there is one recurring theme, that is, art museum has deprived art of its authenticity. This premise emerged along with the first art museum critique in history, and it still standing today. In order to reverse this unwanted process of art and life's separation, there are all sorts of cultural projects and experiments in the twentieth century. A careful analysis of the abovementioned art museum critique and anti-museum campaigns will reveal the fact art museum does not exist outside art, and impose a forced unauthentic status to art. On the contrary, art museum has long existed inside art in the form of spiritual existence, that is, in the form of aesthetics, and constitutes one basic property of art. The loss of authenticity took place in ancient Greece, when aesthetics first emerged. This is an irreversible process. Art museum is nothing more than a reorganization of this process. It is not the reason of it. This study of the relation between art museum and art's authenticity will facilitate our understanding of art in our times. |
