With the rapid expansion in the market demand of interventional medical instruments, it's quite urgent and essential for us to develop the domestic interventional instruments with high quality and to open out a customized CAD system for the special products by using universal CAD software with powerful function. In this paper, Windows XP and UG NX 4.0 software are chosen as the support platform. With Visual C++6.0, the author fulfills each module design of the development CAD system of the interventional medical instruments by compositively using a series developments and the characteres of parts.(1) The techniques related to secondary development based on UG are thoroughly studied here, which mainly include: UG/Open program language development technique, UG/Open user interface development technique, and the connection between user interface and user functions.(2) The basic knowledge about interventional medical instruments are introduced. Fundamental theories of parametrization and feature modeling,and the foundation methods of 3D parametric part library are discussed in detail. These theories play a key role in the parts modeling and the system design.(3) The data flow diagram and the gross structure of the CAD system of the interventional medical instruments was established using software engineering theory and structurized design method. The whole system was divided into four modules including the information input of product module, the process design module, the die&device design module and engineering graphics generation module. Their module structure was also set up.(4) The implementation technique of the system was studied thoroughly. The program flow diagrams are put forward to different modules. A new method of access external data base with ODBC technique in UG/Open API program was presented. The method is very suited to the data processing and management in CAD system because the data is in dependent of the program and shared easily. Finally the application of the CAD system of the interventional medical instruments is introduced.
