H.264/AVC, also named as MPEG-4 PART10, is the newest video coding standard of the Joint Video Team (JVT), which is organized by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group(MPEG).H.264/AVC can support multiple applications such as mobility application with low bandwidth or video broadcasting with high bandwidth. In order to improve encoding efficiency, H.264/AVC adopts lots of new encoding technologies such as multiple reference pictures prediction, different block size partition, 1/4 pixel precision motion vectors, integer transform, quantization, entropy coding based on context, new intra prediction and deblocking filter. Although the coding efficiency of H.264/AVC is as two times as that of MPEG-2, the implementation complexity is also increased another one or two times. This greatly challenges its implementation. It is nearly impossible for a software solution to decode a high definition resolution H.264/AVC coded stream based on general DSP or CPU under current technology. This paper presents a SoC solution which attempts to combine the benefits of software and hardware.This paper includes three parts: introduction of new technology of H.264/AVC, description of whole architecture and realization of CAVLC and DPB parts. Based on the complexity analysis of H.264/AVC, this paper proposed a new macroblock level solution of entropy coding which could improve much performance of decoder and a new structure of storing motion vector which can decrease lots of storage of memory.It passed the simulation and FPGA verification, which proves the solution's feasibility. And this design can support real time decode with high definition.
