Considering today's competitive retail environment and the need for shorter product lifecycles, the enterprises must pursue own value to grow ly for the sake of surviving, developing and expanding. The persistent growth of value must be realized by constantly and quickly developing the new product that can satisfy consumer demands.Design Management is a critical and appropriate method for companies to identify product development resources that can truly shorten the development process and enhance the quality of the product innovation.Design Management (named DM briefly) is to define the problems and targets of design and look for the very designers .Then we can make use of planning, organizing, directing and controling to integrate, moderate or communicate the resources that needed while designing and to find the most suitable solution .And we will realize the pre-arranged purpose and solve problems availably in time in the decided budget by the management of design strategy and design activity.Generally speaking, design management includes two levels of structures, design management strategy and the management of actual design works. Design management strategy is to regard design as one important part in the operation of business enterprise, then absorb the corresponding ideas in the various activities of whole business enterprise and give corresponding programming and leading .The management of actual design works can insure the business enterprise having a good runned effectively design section which will conduct the design actions and put concrete design mission into practice. At present, the study and application of DesignManagement are focused on actual design works-product innovation process thatis studied to discuss the application and situation of DM in our country.Firstly, this paper introduces the elementary knowledge of DM and the related concepts of product innovation .Then, it emphasizes the procedure and characteristic of product innovation as well as the operation , management and communication pattern of the design team. Finally, combining with a case of product innovation design which I participated in and the investigation of the new product development in four domestic enterprises, this paper probes into the practical application of DM, puts forward several proposals to solve the questions and summarizes the characteristic of DM based on the knowledge management.
