In this study a method has been developed to get climatic information automatically by computer from historical documentary records. Typical words describing climatic information have been collected through analyzing the character of historical climatic records. Precipitation information obtained was transformed into anomalous index of annual precipitation, and then the annual distribution patterns of precipitation anomaly in past China can be seen. Using GrADS (Grid Analysis and Display System) the result is converted into grid type data, so the annual distribution patterns can be observed and analyzed more clearly. According to the result, precipitation of China in the 18th century was discussed. It seems that the annual precipitation in China during the 18th century were a little more than normal amount. Besides, time series with a yearly resolution were reconstructed from grid type result. The index series of Beijing region (400 N, 1160 E) for a 100 years period was contrasted with previous study of precip itation in Beijing during the same period, and the two series are consistent with each other.
