One of the current hot points in Geographic Information System research is focus on WebGIS by the combination of GIS technology and network technology.Compared with the traditional Geographic Information System, WebGIS has changed the service mode and provided a more quick and intuitive way to publish the geographic information,making it possible to access and share the geographic information through internet for customers.However,there are some shortcomings in the traditional WebGIS implementations,such as:large network traffic,spatial processing capacity is weak,the heavy burden on the server,load imbalance,etc.,so the new technologies should be used to improve it.First, the source of the subject,the purpose and significance of the subject and the developing history and research status of WebGIS technology in China and overseas is summarized. Then the concepts, principles and implements of AJAX, WebGIS technology, and their advantages and disadvantages are introduced separately and in detail. On this basis, the idea of applying Ajax technology into the WebGIS system is raised and the possible optimization of the system after Ajax application is discussed. At last, Ajax based WebGIS soil and water conservation system of Hubei Province is designed and developed. The system test results show that Ajax technology can improve the system performance by reduce the network traffic, the client requests and the server burden. The exist problems in the research is stated and the research prospect illustrated at the end.
