Competitive intelligence is essential for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to gain and keep competitive advantages, while the SMEs are lack of service support. To solve this contradiction, this paper analyzed competitive intelligence service for SMEs and proposed a service platform as a solution. The quality of competitive intelligence service depends on the fitness of service for the demand of SMEs. As user modeling is an efficient tool to describe user demand, this paper employed user modeling method in competitive intelligence service.This paper analyzed and described the competitive intelligence service for SMEs, and focus on the research of user modeling, which is the core technology. After that, a competitive intelligence service platform was proposed as a solution for the real contradiction. The specific works in this paper are summarized as follows:Firstly, this paper researched on competitive intelligence service for SMEs, including the SMEs competitive intelligence demand analysis from two aspects, which is the foundation of the whole research for user modeling. The service context and service model are also analyzed by learning the relation between information and competitive intelligence.Secondly, this paper employed user modeling method in competitive intelligence service, focusing on the specific problem that generated from using user modeling in a special field, including user model representation, user model construction, user model update and user model application. According to the demand in SMEs, this paper proposed a method to construct user model, which is a combination of sample modeling and manual modeling. This paper attached great attention to the sample modeling method based on the files provided by users, as well as the method to update model. The user model application was also researched by evaluating the intelligence degree of files. After that, data test were made to verify the accuracy of construction method and update method.Finally, a competitive service platform for SMEs was designed on the basis of method research, application research and accuracy verification on user modeling in competitive intelligence service field.The research on competitive intelligence service for SMEs in this paper provided a solution to the real contradiction. The research on user model in competitive intelligence service not only provided a support for the service implementation, but also a guided attempt for similar research.
