Development And Implementation Of Storymap Based On Silverlight

Story map is to tell the story of a place, event, issue, trend, or pattern in a geographic context means of organizing and presenting information. The vigorous development of Internet technology to promote the transition on desktop GIS turns to WebGIS, but also gives an opportunity to development of the story map. But the limitations of traditional WebGIS, it is difficult to meet the Story Map of interactivity and performance capabilities of the requirements, but also in the geographic information processing there is also lagging behind. With the introduction of RIA technology, it solves the shortcomings of traditional WebGIS on interactivity, but can be a good combination of GIS services provided by ArcGIS Server for handling geographic data also provides convenience.This paper based on Silverlight technology and ArcGIS Server platform develop the story map. It explores the current technologies and implementation of WebGIS, A detailed explanation has been done about the principles and application methods of ArcGIS Server REST API and ArcGIS API for Silverlight. Based on above design, we developed the story map of the national station of Yanchi Mu Us desert ecosystem in Ningxia. This system uses the MVVM framework to design Silverlight client page, the system database of spatial data and non-spatial data were accessed through ArcSDE and Web Service. Using ArcGIS Server 10.1 as a publishing platform of map services and related GIS services, through ArcGIS API for Silverlight invokes map services and GIS services. It realizes requirements of the story map in the interactive, including station browsing, graphic interactive of development course, layer control of the station and spatial geographic entity measurement, etc.Proved developed, the story map based on the Silverlight has a beautiful interface, interactive is friendly and map loading is fast. Based on ArcGIS Server platform, it solved the problem of data publishing and management, development requirements is realized. Taking temporal dimension as a clue, the system tells the development of Yanchi Station since establishing through pictures, text video and other means. It not only can meet the need of data management and the demonstration of research achievement in Yanchi Station, but also provides a model for development and utilization of story maps in China.
