Computer-on-a-Chip (CoC) integrates ICs which distributed on the personal computer mainboard into one chip as many as possible, featuring better performance, lighter weight, smaller volume and lower power consumption. Based on the project of the 8086 CPU based CoC, this dissertation designs a resolution and color depth configurable VGA controller, and integrates this VGA controller wtih the 8086 CPU based CoC to make up a complete display system by AMBA AHB Bus. Then, the functional simulation and verification of this display system is performed on the 8086 CoC platform. The main works and achievements of this dissertation are as follows:1. Developing an VGA Controller which is working with 8086 CPU together.2. Developing an interface between 8086 CPU and VGA Controller, making up a complete display system by using AMBA AHB Bus to connect the VGA Controller and the 8086 CPU based CoC.3. Building an 8086 CoC simulation platform, Completing RTL-level simulation of this display system based on the platform.4. Completing FPGA prototype verification of this display system on the Altera DE2 evaluation board. The result of FPGA test shows that the design is correct. This display system can support BMP images range from black and white up to 24-bit true color by configuring some registers. The VGA controller can be used to replace VGA chips in the actual integrated system.
