Research On David Buckingham's Media Educational Thought

David Buckingham is a famous media education expert in England, who has engaged in media educational studies and practice since 1970s and written more than 20 works and more than 170 articles by himself or collaborating with others.This paper focuses on David Buckingham's media educational thought systematically by research on David Buckingham's works and communication with him. The starting points of the research are the social, theoretical and practical context and environment in which David Buckingham formed the media educational thought.Professor David Buckingham takes a cultural study perspective, and has the opinions that the subjects, young people and media, should be put in the real and complex social life. Besides, David Buckingham claims that the research on media education should be from the children's perspective now that we want to know the children. David Buckingham carries out research as an educator for the sake of improving education policy and optimizing the classroom practice.The main part of the article focuses on David Buckingham's media educational thought which contains three aspects, definition of childhood, the relation of young people with media and the theory framework of media education which involves the definition and goal of media education, four key words, teaching strategies and learning theory. The conclusion is that the core of David Buckingham's media educational thought is his emphasis on the persons'social nature, the variety and complexity of the real life.On this basis, this article evaluates and analyses David Buckingham's media educational thought objectively, involve the effects, limitations and the Chinese benefit from it.
