As information technology develops rapidly nowadays, new media led by Internet and Mobile Internet have been closely connected with the public. In the New Media Age, factors such as the usage, recognition and comprehension of media, the ability to judge and examine the content of media, and the degree to which people are influenced by media have a direct impact on people’s life. Meanwhile, new media are also transforming the way how people observe, learn and value the things surrounding them.The university is the leader of the society. Known for being active and innovative, college students represent a special group in the society. However most of the time they seldom get to know the real world, resulting insufficient social experience. It also weakens their ability to screen information and tell right from wrong, and causes misunderstanding while fostering their sense of value. Thus, training students to handle and process the information in correct manner is extremely important to their growth and the role of demonstration to the society.At the same time, the education of media literacy is to cultivate people’s ability to correctly use media, recognize and understand media as well as reflect on the information from media, so that people would take initiatives and enjoy using media. In addition, to enhance people’s media moral ideology and to establish the scientific outlook of media literacy could guide the public to the right direction among plentiful media resources, assist them in self-improvement and foster the development social civilization. This article focuses on the media literacy of college students in the New Media Age. To begin with, the author intensively studies related concepts such as new media and media literacy in details and presents the current standing of media literacy in China in the New Media Age by overviewing and comparing the development status of domestic and foreign media. Upon that, the research of this article is based on the first-hand data retrieved from the investigation of media literacy among college students in Beijing. On that basis, this article summarizes the major issues regarding college students’media literacy in the New Media Age and discusses the underlying causes accordingly. Finally, in response to those issues and causes, the author comes up with the effective measures for college students to develop a sound outlook of media literacy, in an effort to show them the direction in this overwhelming information world and to prevent them from getting lost in the close-to-reality "virtual society" in the New Media Age.
