With the rapid development of China's agricultural economy, intensive farming of live-stock and aquaculture has gradually become the main breeding. However, with the develop-ment of aquaculture industry, there has been different models and types of cross-breeding species and breeding density continuously improved, it is necessary to establish a scientific monitoring system to manage the feed delivery, disease control, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, etc. In this paper, we develop a monitoring system which is based on wireless sensor networks for aquaculture ponds. The system implements real-time monitoring of aquaculture environmental factors and provide a teaching, research and scientific management methods. Further, our research provides a new approach to reduce farming costs, achieve a healthy cul-tivation, and improve farming income.In this paper, we mainly study the wireless sensor networks and according to the charac-teristics aquaculture environmental monitoring system and the shortcomings in current envi-ronmental monitoring system, we using ZigBee wireless network technology to establish a monitoring system for aquaculture. In this system, the sensor node can collect information on the culture environment, and then sent the information through the wireless network node to the coordinator node. And then, coordinator node sent the data with prescribed format to the data management center via the serial line, so as to realize the data collection and transmis-sion of system.According to design requirements of our system, this paper mainly includes the follow-ing parts:(1) Reviews the current relative works about monitoring system of aquaculture. We pro-posed use of wireless sensor network technology to establish aquaculture monitoring system based on the actual application environment and existing wireless network communication technology.(2) By comparing several popular NFC technologies, we chose ZigBee technology to build a wireless sensor network. We studied in detail the development and current status of ZigBee technology. We are also descript detail the main features of the ZigBee protocol, net-work topology and the ZigBee network protocol stack structure and the formation process of ZigBee network.(3) According to the characteristics of the ZigBee network, we design a monitoring sys-tem of aquaculture based on ZigBee technology, study the hardware structure of node and de-sign the software architecture of every part for system.(4) We laid the node in the region of monitoring and tested the performance of whole network system. Then we summarized and analyzed the test results. The whole system achieved the function of wireless networking based ZigBee technology and aquaculture envi-ronmental monitoring. Compare with other environment monitoring systems, our system have several advan-tages, such as cabling avoidably, maintain easily, good scalability, and so on. At same time, because the ZigBee network is independent able with the specific applications, we can easily extend this system to other applications.
