A Research To The Function Of Journalism And Communication In Government Crisis Management

Through the period of transforming, China has witnessed the ascending tendency of different types of crises with increasing social impact. The effectiveness in coping with these crises has significant meaning in protecting people's lives and property, maintaining social stability and harmony and coordinating the development between social and political economy. In the coping process, news media is gradually becoming the key variable. It is easy to find the interrelations between the crises managements and new media in the incidents like May 12 Wenchuan quake, March 28 flooding accident in Shanxi Wangjialing Coal Mine, as well as March 31 coal and gas outburst accident in Henan Yichuan. A sufficient and adequate media network can work as a bridge between the government and the society by supporting the decision making of the government's crises management. It also enhances trust and cooperation, and thus, helps build up a healthy image of the government.Through an examination of the news media during crises management and a case study, this thesis aims at analyzing the importance of news media using frameworks of journalism, management and communication theories. Furthermore, it aims to provide some suggestions to complete and enhance both our news media and the development of crises management.
