The rapid development of information and technology has been greatly accelerating the process of modernization and information of iron and steel industry. In recent years, the management of ERP as the representative figure of the enterprise has brought enormous economic benefits. However, the production orders continued as a small quantity and variety, personalized conversion, which is in contradiction with current steel industry's mode of production, making production planning and scheduling more difficult. Into the 21st century, advanced planning and scheduling with the development and improvement of APS and related technology and optimization tools, some steel companies are gradually introducing APS system, which execute the function planning, producing with existing enterprise management system to optimize production orders and improve production efficiency.After fully research of history of APS technology and today's mainstream business and information management tools, such as ERP,SCM,MES and etc, using SAP APO as an example to introduce to strong optimizing function of APS. Firstly, overview of SAP APO system's features and planning modules. And then in-depth study of data transmission between SAP APO system and other systems(R/3 and non R/3). especially the in real-time and periodic exchange of master data and transaction data through Core Interface between SAP APO system and R/3 system as well as how to coordinate to complete the function of production in long-middle-short terms. Finally, through in-depth research of production mode of steel industry, proposed a production solution based on SAP R/3.SAP APO and MES as the core for steel industry. It provides an integration of production planning mode to complete functions such as demand planning, detailed production planning, sales planning as well as transportation planning schedules. In which SAP R/3 is responsible for the daily business of financial, procurement, inventory, sales and customer information management, SAP APO as a planning tool to complete demand planning, detailed production planning and transportation planning and the comprehensive planning capabilities. MES carries out workshop production monitoring, scheduling and on-site feedback.
