With the rapid development of computer simulation, virtual reality, 3D network game, the application demands for the virtual roaming technologies and 3D outdoor scene technologies are getting more and more widespread. For the purpose of applying the key technologies of construction virtual roaming system, this paper is established on the research based on the GPU cloud layer rendering and the expandable virtual roaming platform.The main contributions of this paper include such things: First, the cloud layer rendering algorithm which based on the graphics processor (GPU) to solve the united Navior-Stokes fluid equation and the Perlin noise is realized and solved; Second, using the existing virtual reality technologies to built an expandable outdoor virtual scene roaming platform.By using graphics processor (GPU) to solve the Navior-Stokes fluid equation, this paper has realized the dynamic accelerating cloud rendering which based on the physical model, thus raised the computation speed and achieved real-time rendering effection. Based on the Perlin noise, this paper produced real-time simulation cloud layers of different shapes, getting the changes of different cloud layer shapes under different Perlin noise coefficient and the random variations of different cloud layers when the Perlin noise coefficient is constant. To the nature cloud layer, this paper has realized the automatic growth, dissipation and effects of the cloud layers fluttering with the wind and the change colors as the time past by, and enhanced the cloud layer fidelity.This paper mainly carries on the outdoor scene rendering, and has realized a highly real, first person interactive outdoor scene roaming platform. This work involves many kinds of virtual scene technologies, including trees, sky, fog rendering, and utilizes these technologies to establish an outdoor scene. Through real-time interactive, it makes the users have a free view and experience of the virtual environment. This paper also introduces many key technologies, such as the collision examination technology, the 3D modeling technology and the view frustum technology etc. It has realized the platform extension by using XML script documents to load data.Based on the platform, the paper has realized the virtual roaming of the Liaoning Normal University campus and Beijing partial cities and communities. The development environment of this roaming platform software based on Visual Studio 2003 and DirectX 3D.
