With the improvement of computer's performance and virtual reality (VR) technology, many high-performance three-dimensional modeling software and real-time roaming computer graphics systems have been developed and widely used in related fields. With these software and systems, we can generate a realistic three-dimensional virtual environment and perform real-time roaming in order to achieve the integrated function of seeing, hearing and touching.To construct a real-time roaming virtual campus system, studies on the theory and technology of 3D modeling and simulation, interactive design of roaming programming, realization of basic 3D GIS functions have been carried out.First, the background and significance are presented, and the research status of virtual campus at home and abroad is explored. Second, the basic concepts, characteristics, categories and composition of VR technology are introduced, and after introducing three-dimensional modeling and software technology of real-time roaming, this paper summarized some key technologies in the process of constructing the system of virtual and real-time roaming campus including optimization technology for three dimensional modeling technology, database structure and layers of detail (LOD) technique. As a study case, demands and functions of virtual campus system of Kunming University of science and technology is studied. Based on the modeling software MultiGen Creator and the roaming studio Vega, through data collection, data preprocessing, scene construction, real-time roaming system achievement and some basic GIS function achievement, this campus virtual and real-time roaming system is constructed.
