"Virtual reality to is a virtual world (environment) made by computer which can give people many kinds of excited body feeling, it is a kind of advanced human-computer interaction system, and it has very good application prospects in sports simulation. In this project, we designed a virtual bicycle-roaming system based on column multi-projector environment. In this system, we used technology of the sensor, DSP control technology, three-dimensional modeling technology, multi-thread, overlapped real-time communication technology and network transmission technology. And a person can travel in the virtual world by virtual display technology of the multi-projector system. The virtual environment constructed by computer can make participants take the experience of ridding bike freely in the true environment. This research is a kind of innovation which combines many technologies including virtual traveling and gymnastic bicycle simulation etc. It has very good research value and application prospect.Virtual roaming systems used to base on two-dimensional interactive interface, which use mouse (two-dimensional input) and keyboard (linear input) as interactive equipments. The interaction is not harmonious and natural. We designed this virtual bicycle-roaming system using gymnastic bicycle for man-computer interactive tool so that we can develop further study in this area.To realize a virtual simulation system, we should use many advanced technologies in many fields, such as real-time three-dimensional picture building technology, three-dimensional sounds compound and location technology, stereo display technology, dynamic environment modeling technology etc. And we emphasize the real-time requirements and organized the common technology and encapsulate them in our virtual-roaming engine.Our human-computer interactive system uses many technologies, such as multi-thread technology and overlapped real-time communication technology, senor technology for real-time interaction. For better real-time ability of virtual display system, we use double buffer technology, parallelize rendering technology, two-dimensional texture for three-dimensional model technology, terrain display separately and instance technology etc. We use object-oriented method and design it based on components. And finally we fulfill the virtual bicycle-roaming system based on column multi-projector system successfully.The system can be all-purpose, we can not only use it for virtual gymnastic bicycle, but also for sailing simulation, flight simulation etc. We can also use it to drive other virtual platforms or 3D games (such as car racing, exciting skiing). It is a new application in virtual sports and a meaningful try of VR technology.
