Six-pulse canal is an achievement in the water environmental governance field of ancient China. It is composed of six canals, which is used to sewage, control flood, resist water invasion and shipping. And it is the major river network of ancient city of Guangzhou in China. Now, the water system of Guangzhou city has not assumed by six-pulse canal, and six-pulse canal has also become history. But, we can still learn many building concepts from six-pulse canal. In order to make more people know of the great achievement in the water environmental governance field in ancient China, and know of the great role of six-pulse canal, this paper reproduces the style and features of six-pulse canal using virtual reality technology.This paper researches on the virtual simulation system of six-pulse canal. In the Windows XP environment, the system is at the background of Guangzhou Qing dynasty six-pulse canal, and uses the process developing virtual reality simulation application based on MultiGen Creator/Vega as the main line, and achieves the real simulation and real-time roaming of six-pulse canal. This paper mainly studies the following contents:1. The frame of virtual simulation system of six-pulse canal is researched. And the system's design goals, functional modules, system development process, and hardware and software environment required during the development process is confirmed.2. The process of establishing the 3D models in the virtual scene of six-pulse canal is researched. First, the entities are analyzed, their texture and model information is collected, and texture information is preprocessed in Photoshop to generate the specifications meeting requirements. Then, the preliminary models are established in 3DS MAX, which are converted to FLT format files. Finally, the initial model is imported into Creator and is optimized in it.3. Researching on the technology optimizing 3D models. In Creator, there is much technology optimizing models. In this paper, I majorly research on four types of technology:adjusting model database hierarchy, reducing the number of polygons, LOD technology and texture optimization.4. This paper studies the implement approach of communication module in six-pulse canal virtual simulation system, and the approach of realizing path roaming and manual roaming. Path roaming function is realized by Path Tool of Vega graphical interface, while manual roaming function is realized by application programming interfaces provided by Vega and programming with C++ language based on Visual C++ Platform.The main feature of this paper is to use virtual reality to achieve the reproduction of the style and features of six-pulse canal. Experiment results show that the virtual simulation system has good interactivity, fast speed of loading models and good displaying effect and is applied well to Guangzhou Museum in the Shanghai Expo.Finally, this paper summarizes the research and development work of virtual simulation system of six-pulse canal, and points out the drawbacks of the paper and the research work in the future.
