After the Cold War, with the rapid development of economic and information technology, a country's international status has not only depends on the strength of its hard power, but also depends on the recognition of its soft power such as culture, ideas and values. The source of national strength is not simply confined to the military, economic, political, scientific and technological areas, competition between countries is no longer the use of violent means to obtain the maximization of national interests, but a country's ideological, cultural and values to attract other countries to emulate, with a more civilized means to gain more recognition. In the international environment, how to establish a good national image, how to use a positive national image in international relations, international affairs has become a critical mission.A good national image is the first card in country's foreign business as well as the permit in exchange and cooperation. At present widespread of internet and the formation of "global village" more highlight the importance of national image. Based on the connotation of the national image, this thesis elaborates the relationship between national images and soft power; analyzes the embodiment of national image in the "5 ? 12" earthquake disaster; discusses the communication theories used in mass media coverage of the catastrophic event; recalls the abuses of national image in Chinese history and proposes elements of building a national image as well as the strategy in China's national image building.
