The automobile panel die is charactered by complex shape, large size and high precision of compatibility. It's an important issue confronted by Chinese auto industry how to enhance the quality and efficiency of automobile panel dies design & manufacture. Especially the application of CAD/CAM into mould production has become an effective approach to solve this problem. Mould standardization has been expanding from mould standard parts into the whole production process as mould industry develops day and night. Standardization of mould components and typicalization of mould structure are turning into the core technology of integration of CAD/CAE/CAM.In this paper, multifold fast design theory and many factors which affect the design efficiency of automobile panel dies were researched. The method of develop the template design system of automobile panel dies based on UG was put forward on basis of the upper work.The basic theory of parameterization and feature modeling, the related technique of UG redevelopment and the approach to develop standard parts library based on UG were studied deeply. To obtain the implementing scheme of UG redevelopment, many efforts were made in user interface design and application design, mainly including the application program interface (API) of UG NX with Visual C++; the main menu development by UG/Open MenuScript; UG style interactive interface design based on UG/Open UIStyler corresponding to the user-defined menu for the module; model data calling and operating implementation with UG/Open API etc.According to the requirements of the automobile panel dies design, setting up the overall architecture of the system and the partition functional module was finished. Meanwhile, the system flow and data stream based on the software engineering technology was established. On the basis of the structural characteristics of auto punching standard part and typical part, by parametric design and feature modeling, parametric feature model is made and overall design scheme of auto outer panel 3D parametric template library is advanced. Meanwhile, the appropriative template library of outer panel dies, which was combined with standard parts library to compose the material library of template design, has been established by parametric technology; and fast assembly of auto outer panel dies is achieved by program design and UG redevelopment. The whole process of template design was explained by design a draw die of a auto door mould and proves that the fast design system is of importance to improve the efficiency of mould design, simplifying the process, and strengthen standardization of parts.
