Media literacy refers to people's ability of cognizing, understanding, choosing, evaluating, creation and production as well as their speculative and reactive competence when dealing with all the media information. In connection with the influence of public media, media literacy education means the educational ideas and approaches centering on the cultivation of media literacy. As the public security bureau is a window of the Communist Party and the Government in our country, and the policeman and their work is a focus for public media, through the appropriate employment of media a nice image of police can be built and more valuable information about the police can be obtained. In view of this, it is vital to help the policeman cultivate the ability of recognizing the media, reacting appropriately to the media and the ability of employing the media. Thus, it is of urgent need to carry on media literacy education for the prospective policeman in the public security colleges.With harmonious society construction as a background, this thesis mainly focuses on the media literacy education for current public security colleges and further deals with the connection of media literacy education with the working practice of the police, including the problms of how to narrow the gap between the police and the media, how to improve the police work, and so on.The first part of the thesis makes a survey on the background, approaches, contents, means and value of the research on media literacy education.The second part introduces the origin and development of media literacy and that of media literacy education at first. Then it expounds the current conditions of media literacy education in public security colleges from three aspects: the starting and spread of media literacy education for policemen and its achivements; deficiency in police media literacy education and reasons for this deficiency.Based on the statistics of a questionnaire on media literacy of the students in Hunan Public Security college with which the author works, the third part elaborates on measures that can be taken for media literacy education in public security colleges, including how to set the educational aim in a scientific way, how to construct the contents of media literacy education systematically and how to widen educational channels and to deepen media literacy education. It is hoped that this thesis may provide inspiration and reference for further research on media literacy education aimed at public security colleges.
