The Research On The Open Source Learning Platform Based On Streaming Media Technology

With the rapid development of the computer network technology and digital technology, networks with its rich information resources, friendly interaction, excellent performance characteristics as well as good opening characteristics, are welcomed more and more by people. For the new communication technology provides more methods for transferring up-to-date information and knowledge during teaching and learning, learning with network (e-learning) has become a hot spot of modern education. Comparing with the traditional teaching methods, e-learning has the advantage of digital, intelligent and personalized characteristics on instruction. Learners have a real deep-level choice on the learning difficulty, time and location of the course. Nowadays, the education network at home and abroad are all being maturing, and has been widely applied. According to statistics, there are more than 800 universities providing online degree programs through the Internet, and the number of the open source e-learning platform that can be selected has been more than 50.The rapid development of Internet media has made people not only just be satisfied with finding and transferring text data through network, but also hope that more multimedia files with audio and video contents can be gained. As a result, streaming media technology are shown and developed rapidly. Streaming media technology has solved the problem that multimedia information resources such as video and audio information can be transferred on the low-bandwidth network. In such a way, these multimedia resources can be managed digitally. It also makes video and audio resources become easier to be controlled and match the needs of learners better.At present, the application of streaming media technology and network technology in education area is a hot issue. This article will make an overall comparison among a variety of e-learning open-source platforms on their performances and features. Then it makes a comprehensive evaluation, and chooses a more complete and mature open source e-learning platform—the Moodle platform. By analyzing Moodle's function, comparing with other platforms' features, for the parts that to be improved—streaming media resource on-demand, combining with streaming media technology into Moodle are decided as a kind of secondary development. The development will include adding Stream Mod module into Moodle. By setting up the Real Server streaming media server, teachers can release streaming media resources and live teaching resources, manage resources and multimedia courseware, as well as students can watch the live-on-demand resources and classroom live teaching on the Moodle platform.The Stream Mod module can automatically generates SMIL format of the streaming media resources and releases streaming media resources. Not only video can be described, but also words, images and audio, and all these multimedia elements can be integrated as a whole by SMIL. SMIL is an important tool on the Internet to integrate multi-media programs, especially as a main language tool for displaying streaming media. By using courseware templates, teachers only need a simple operation to generated SMIL resources.
