Comparative Research Of UK And US Graduate Education Mode In Journalism And Communication (Research Project Of HUST Grduate School)

As a cross-disciplinary research project, the research of graduate education in Journalism and Communication involves such disciplines as Journalism, Communication and Education. Current domestic research has covered Journalism Education, Communication Education and Graduate Education and made preliminary achievements in certain areas, but left in these three areas huge space of uncovered areas, especially in frontier areas. It can be explained by three"adequacies"and three"lacks": adequacy in specialized research, in macroscopic and descriptive research and in research for domestic Journalism and Communication education, while lack of cross-disciplinary research, of microscopic and analytical research and of research of Journalism and Communication education in countries with developed media industry.On behalf of western countries with highly-developed media industry, UK and US own large numbers of world-level media and the most powerful media staff in the world. This paper will focus on how these two countries train their media staff by developing graduate education in Journalism and Communication, how the graduate education mode has been established and what guiding principles this education mode has brought into Journalism and Communication elite education of China.Four sections constitute this paper. At the beginning, retrospectus and ordering, which provide this research with necessary theoretical origins, have been given to fundamental theories and development process of graduate education, Journalism and Communication education and graduate education in Journalism and Communication. Investigation, come in the next, of approximately one hundred UK and US mainstream Journalism and Communication colleges has been made, with an emphasis of graduate education mode which includes entrance management, course management, faculty management, research management, internship management and degree management. After some typical case studies of graduate education, summary of the graduate education mode in both countries has been reached by comparative research of differences between two graduate education modes, reference of one mode to another and convergence of both modes. The research scope finally moved back to China by comparing graduate education modes of China, UK and US in Journalism and Communication, feasible suggestions have been made to renovation of graduate education mode in China based on serious consideration of China's circumstances.
