Headlines have been called the display windows of newspapers. The translation of headlines has always been a vital stage in the process of journalism translation. Among various scopes of journalism, sports news, however, has its own stylistic feature, demonstrated in vocabulary, syntax, grammar, etc. It is one of the most vigorous and attractive journalism sectors. It requires certain knowledge background from the non-native-language readers to understand and appreciate them fully. However, previously, researches usually were focused on the journalism field as a whole, not particularly on English sports news and its headlines. This paper is intended to probe into the characteristics of English sports news headlines and in the latter part, into its translation, which is not fully explored yet.This paper consists of four sectors in all. Firstly, it is the introduction and a review of the relevant literature on news headlines where sports news headlines are most focused on. Secondly, the colorful and diversified characteristics of English sports news headline examples and their respective analysis are provided, followed by the discussion and suggestion of translation tactics in the next Chapter. Finally, this paper concludes and gives suggestions of further research areas.Based on the first-hand examples from the mainstream British and American newspapers, this paper probed into the contemporary features of English sports news headlines, on the aspects of lexicon, rhetoric devices and cultural background. In the chapter on translation, the author also gave out some translation examples in order to prove his points, with Nida's functional equivalence as the core.
