Numerous touching stories of donation occurred after the 5-12 earthquake in China, which have made some media scholars conclude that the charity level in China developed into a higher level. Charity activity literally means doing something beneficial to the public which actually is the re-allocation of social wealth. It includes extensively the donation of money, time, energy and knowledge by an organization or an individual to the society or others.Charity in China has developed a lot in China since the reform and development in 1978. As a way to re-allocate social wealth, charity activity wins the recognition by most scholars, experts and government as well. In the past few years, more and more popular stars and entrepreneurs have involved themselves in charity activities. Since 2005, news reports on charity activity booms from several articles annually to more than one hundred articles, demonstrating the rise of the concern on charity. But the reporting of media about charity in China seems to have changed little.This thesis aims to study the frames of reporting on charity activity by Chinese newspapers through the comparative analysis of China's and Singapore's newspapers. After a content analysis of the two newspapers, this thesis also tries to explore the underneath factors for the frames.This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first part introduces current research in this field and further clarifies research purpose and research method. The second part makes a comparison of the current situation of charity activity between China and foreign countries. The third part provides concrete description and explanation of the process and result of content analysis. The fourth part analyzes the differences between two newspapers and investigates the reasons for the kind of frame of Chinese reporting on charity. The fifthpart offers some suggestions for Chinese newspaper in future reporting on charity news.
