In discrete manufacturing industry, ERP has played an important role in enterprise management. However, it still can not meet the requirement of fine management as inadequate capacity of production monitoring and supervision, SO the manufacturing execution system (MES) comes to being in order to make up the gap between business layer and shop floor control system, to realize the data transmission and share and to enhance the management of shop floor.As the rapid development and new demands of modern manufacturing, the traditional means of data collection can not meet the requirement of the MES in quality management, shop floor task scheduling and production process control. In recent years, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has developed rapidly. With the function of automatic object identification and data storage, RFID can synchronize the object and information flow and support data collection in MES. Therefore, it is practical significant to study on RFID-based MES to promote the development of MES.This paper studies on scheme and application of RFID based MES according to the problems and the characteristics of discrete manufacturing industry. On the basis of the analysis of MES, RFID and its application in discrete manufacturing, this paper presents an application scheme of RFID based MES. The research and implement of partial function of RFID based MES, RFID based data collection and processing and integration of MES and ERP is emphasized.On the foundation of the analysis of the function model and integration standard of the existing MES and research of combination technique between MES and RFID, this paper presents RFID based MES function frame. The research and design of quality management, shop floor task scheduling and process control is emphasized.Based on the analysis of data collection means in existing and the problem of RFID application, this paper presents a data storing based collection system of RFID data which combines RFID and barcode technology and circulate the RFID tag. According to the analysis of RFID middleware, this paper presents a message mechanism based RFID middleware system and realizes the message mechanism.According to the existing integration model of different data sources, XML based model is designed to realize data integration between ERP and MES. The conversion between XML and relation database as well as C/S based communication is realized.In the end, a RFID based MES derived from presented scheme is introduced, which is used in an engine production corporation in Chongqing and the effect is also compared with production management using barcode technology.
