Service of data communication is primary in 3rd generation mobile communication system. It can satisfy the requirement about multimedia and high speed data communication service of customers. Some requirement of 3G data rate was proposed by IMT-2000 to support this service: 2Mbps above indoor, 384kbps outdoor with low speed and 144kbps outdoor with high speed.In 3G standards, WCDMA base on R99 can not take this requirement. Therefore, 3GPP brought in HSDPA technology in R5 and HSUPA in R6 through improvement of air interface. HSDPA and HSUPA constitute HSPA which can be termed the 3.5G base on WCDMA network. Its data rate can reach 14.4Mbps in downlink and 5.76Mbps in uplink which far more high than the R99 and R4. It is important evolution of WCDMA standard.In this paper, DCH in the physical layer of WCDMA is researched firstly, include transport channel, physical channel and mapping from transport channel to physical channel. E-DCH is realized by enhancing and improving of DCH. Different and process of improving are analyzed by the comparison between E-DCH and DCH. Protocol architecture and process of work are analyzed too. In chapter 4th, HARQ, Node B dispatching, 2ms TTI, soft handover and channel coding are researched in detail, which have the important impact on performance of HSUPA. Research on HARQ is the key of the paper, which include three kinds of ARQ protocol and three kinds of HARQ redundancy mode. The total regulation of HARQ in HSUPA which adopts SAWARQ and TYPE I, II is optimized. A new scheme of the total regulation of HARQ in HSUPA is proposed which adopts SRARQ and time-variation/non time-variation channel automatic HARQ. The optimized scheme has higher data rate ability to adapt the varying of channel and good performance proved by analyzed and researched.
