In order to enhance the data transmission performance of the WCDMA system, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is introduced to enhance the downlink performance in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 5 standard; High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) is introduced to enhance the uplink performance in 3GPP R6 standard. The aim of HSUPA is to improve the efficiency of uplink capacity, to increase the throughout of cell and covering range of uplink high speed data service. For the purpose, a new transport channel E-DCH (Enhanced Dedicated Channel) and a new entity of MAC-e in the MAC layer are introduced, and a serial of key technology is adopted. The main technology considerations for HSUPA are as follow: Fast HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest), NodeB controlled Scheduling, Fast (E)-DCH setup, and so on.HARQ is the core technology in physical layer of the HSUPA system, integrating the advantage of ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) and FEC (Forward Error Correction). In prder to support the high data transmission, the N channel SW (Stop and Wait) scheme and Chase combining physical layer HARQ is recommended in HSUPA by 3GPP.This paper mainly discusses the HARQ technology in HSUPA, performs the link simulation of physical layer, and draws a conclusion of link performance. There are five parts of this paper: the forward, the introduction of HSUPA, the principle of HARQ, the realization of HARQ in HSUPA system, and the analysis of the simulation results.
