HSUPA is the next evolution step for UMTS networks. The technology has been introduced in the release 6 of 3GPP standards. The objective of HSUPA is to enhance uplink packet data transmission by achieving data rates of up to 5.76 Mbps. Furthermore, HSUPA will increase uplink capacity and reduce latency. A combination of HSDPA and HSUPA is especially beneficial, since it will allow optimized packet data transfer in downlink and uplink. Services that benefit from HSUPA are multimedia applications requiring excellent uplink performance.The main research results can be summarized as follows. First, the state-of-the-art and the characteristics of WCDMA HSUPA are briefly introduced, and the HSUPA key technologies and the impact on the radio access are outlined in detail. Secondly, some new characteristics of WCDMA HSUPA are deeply investigated in this paper, including the new enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) and the new medium access control (MAC) entity, shorter uplink transmission time interval (TTI) length, then the emphasis is put on the following three key techniques, i.e., more simple transport channel processing of E-DCH, fast physical layer Hybrid-ARQ (HARQ) for the uplink, fast NodeB based uplink scheduling. Thirdly, the requirement analysis and scheme design are performed for the above key technologies in HSUPA. The proposed design scheme is validated by simulated experiments. Finally, the designed scheme is implemented by software and tested in real environment. Through the qualitative and quantitative comparison between the simulation and real tests, some simple and convenient and more high-performance realization methods can be found for the concrete HSUPA software realization. Moreover, it is verified that the effective realization of the key technologies of HSUPA can improve the system performance of WCDMA HSUPA obviously.
