The research and application of virtual reality technology has gotten rapid development in recent years. Virtual campus is a specific application of virtual reality technology in the digital campus. The basic principles and key technologies of virtual campus are studied, which include system design, 3D modeling, the implement of the virtual scenes and interactive control. Main work in this paper includes:(1) The system is designed against the overall goal of virtual campus. C/S is chosen as the development model. VC is selected as the development platform. OpenGL is chosen as the 3D graphics library; Spatial data and attributive data are stored in the database for unified management, and 3D model and 3D engine are designed respectively using object-oriented design ideas, which organize the models and the function of the system. This design makes the system more openly, scalabily and maintainabily, and occupies less resource to achieve a faster speed.(2) The three-dimensional modeling technology is studied. The hybrid modeling technology is chosen which combines the advantages of the Geometry-Based modeling and the Image-Based modeling. The collection method about data of the building space and texture of data is studied, and is modeled. The real terrain is simulated using DEM. The picture is set as texture, and the ground material is set also. The trees are modeled by plane trees technology based on image. The sky is modeled by the cube sky box technology. The 3DS model is also used in the complex model.(3) The method of implementing the virtual scene is studied. A certain degree of freedom of roaming results is achieved. To make the scene more realistic, the methods of setting light, fog and blanking are adopted. The method of AABB is used to improve the collision detection, and the detection efficiency is strengthened. A more precise and efficient method of choice and feedback is adopted against the low efficiency.
