Today there are more and more discussions about VR technology applied to building digital cities, digital scenic spots and digital campus. The 3D virtual scene built on VRML makes one have an immersed sense. The research in the paper, belonging to the project of the advanced research at Luoyang travel guide system, is based on the project of virtual campus at Luoyang College of Technology (LYCT). It focuses on the research of virtual campus modeling based on VRML and the realization of scenic interaction, putting the rapid display of large-scale virtual scenes into practice. The research work is listed as follows:1. The researcher introduces the VR technology, overview the development of virtual campus at home and abroad and analyze the possible problems in virtual campus construction, thus the research field is established.2. The features of polygon modeling and Image-Based Rendering (IBR) in the virtual scene are analyzed. The method of combining virtual technique with reality is taken in the research. Some modeling software is adopted, such as Internet Space Builder (ISB), Cosmo worlds, Vrmlpad etc, realizing the complex and static models.3. In this paper, some principles in the model design are provided to solve the ubiquitous contradictions between fidelity and Real-time display in the virtual scene modeling. Combining virtual campus scene based on LOD layering modeling with polyhedron panorama, texture mapping and the LOD application of the model are deeply discussed.4. In order to accelerate the display speed when visiting in the virtual scene, the paper does some research into partitioning the wide-field scene controlling and scanning in many ways.5. By the means of introducing script language, the motion control of virtual models and the interaction of scene information are realized. And the way of optimizing VRML files is introduced. These methods realize the preliminary inquiries about virtual scene information, and introduce the way of publishing virtual reality scene through the Internet.Finally, tested by the campus networks, the project has reached the planned purposes and made LYCT known to the public.
