Test is short for measure and experiment, whose basic task is to acquire information, namely, to get information about the measured parameters through testing system or instruments. The auto testing system is a system that can measure, process data and then display or output test results automatically. Such systems are normally based on standard testing system BUS or instrument BUS (GPIB, VXI, PXI, etc.), with characteristics of high-speed, high-precision, multi-function, multi-parameter and wide measuring range.The auto testing system shown in this paper, which is designed and developed for TD-SCDMA base station R&D, is mainly used to realize a long-time continuing RF test of TD-SCDMA base station R&D. This system consists of automatic testing software, industrial PC (IPC), GPIB controller and testing instrument.This paper starts with the basic theory. Firstly, the concept and the development of auto testing system, along with introduction about some key techniques. Secondly, analysis of the RF test foundation of TD-SCDMA base station, including the definition and purpose of test projects, manual test method and the priority of test instruments.The research work in this paper comprises the design and development of software and the connection of hardware. To be precise, the software part consists of item requirements, design ideas, software implementation flowchart, tools application and code process, as well as the function part that has realized the entire software design ideas according to this classification. The hardware part includes hardware connection diagram and so on.Finally the method to calculate the uncertainty of main test projects by this system is also provided, which is verified by the results of practical test.This system, by solving the problems produced in the process of testing the RF performance of base station, frees test engineers from repetitive work while doing RF test, and enables them to accomplish long-time and high-precision testing task by just controlling the software, yet with more efficiency and accuracy. The operation of software is easy to learn, and the training period of test staff will be shortened, which is in line with the trend of more professionalized social division of labor.
