With the ever-increasing competition among manufacturing industries, knowledge assets in enterprise play increasingly important role in keeping competitive advantage. In some important equipment design institutes, engineers must accumulate design knowledge for long time before they can be competent for their job. When they retire, the enterprises can hardly keep their valuable knowledge. At the present, it is an urgent need to retain this valuable knowledge in the enterprises and provide design engineers in time with the knowledge when they are carrying through design processes. Based on the idea of machine-human knowledge assistance, the framework of knowledge assistant system oriented mechanical design was proposed. Two issues, Knowledge base and knowledge providing technique, are emphatically studied in the paper.Firstly, basing on requirement analysis, the framework of mechanical design oriented knowledge assistant system is established. Each part of the framework is described in detail, and key point of research is listed.Secondly, basing on knowledge structure analysis of power cabin, knowledge representation method suitable for knowledge assistance realization is proposed. E-R model is designed and translated into logic model. Knowledge base is realized basing on database.Thirdly, aimed at the purpose of knowledge assistance, a knowledge supply method based on task-oriented knowledge requirement model and knowledge assistant structure is proposed - i.e. via the definition of task knowledge model and user knowledge model, define and solve the specific user's knowledge demand for some specific task; and via rationally and structural knowledge organization, realize the effect of providing required knowledge to user actively and layered.Finally, a case study in the field of vehicle's power cabin design is given, and corresponding prototype system is constructed.
