With the continuous development of information technology, software development project management has gained increasing attention and has at the same time evolved into an integral part of project management. Software development project is different from production and other kinds of engineering projects: it only involves designing, utilizes mainly human resources rather than a plenty of material resources and yields codes and technical papers in stead of other material outcomes. All these characteristics lead to a great extent of uniqueness.Owing to this uniqueness, literally employing the conventional theories of project management in the case of software development might suffer a certain extent of risk. Thereby, as an exploration for a specific management mode for software development, emerges the agile mode, which has received certain attention in software development circles in western countries in recent years and has been utilized by a number of companies. The essence of the agile mode formulates as follows: the inevitable variety of variable factors that may occur determines that software development should be a self-adapting and self-adjusting process. In practice, we should prioritize this adaptability, rather than forseeability, which is much too keen on arranging everything before hand. This paper reviews a large tank of literature on agile mode and project management, profoundly explores the agile theory, and discusses advantages and shortcomings of agile mode and conventional theories on software development project management respectively. Based on these, we proceed to a software development project in practice, the new seafarer's passport Management Information System, illustrate how agile mode and conventional theories are combined in application, evaluate the outcome, and offer some advice on problems that might emerge.
