Effective data acquisition and transmission are the basis of equipment health monitoring. But in some situations, traditional wiring systems are impractical due to the limitation of wires, especially for the health monitoring of distributive systems or equipment groups. In addition, wiring systems are limited in their extension and robustness. In recent years, the research and development of wireless sensor network (WSN) has devoted a new way for solving this kind of problems. In this paper, some techniques and methods of WSN and its application in health monitoring were researched. The main contents are as follows:(1) According to the need of information acquisition and transmission in equipment health monitoring, several WSN development platforms were analysized and compared. Based on this, the framework of WSN for health monoitoring was brought forward, the hardware subsystem based on CC2430 was designed, and the ZigBee network protocol was selected.(2) The ZigBee protocol was analyzed in detail, and it was improved and simplified to make it more suitable for monitoring application.(3) The data acquisition and transmission characteristics of the WSN node based on CC2430 were analyzed quantatitively, and an easy and feasible location approach was put into effect.(4) For healtn monotoring application, the information transmission and processing abilities of traditional WSN nodes were insufficient, so a node platform which integrated DSP with CC2430 processor was devoloped to enhance its distributive processing ability. Meanwhile, its performance indexes and power consumption were analyzed.(5) An integrated laboratory prototype system was developed. Experiments in doors and outdoors were done to verify its transmission and network organization functions. Also this system was applied to structure health monitoring in laboratory. Compared with wiring monitoring system, the results showed that the prototype system was effective.The experiment results show that this kind of WSN which integrates CC2430 with DSP processor and the simplied ZigBee protocol can be used in equipment health monitoring. It will offer a new approach for the measurement and transmission of condition featured signals from complex equipments.
