With the development of commnication technology and network, it is necessary to integrate the high speed communication interface to embedded system, for example, ethernet. In this paper, the basic concepts of the embedded system and ethernet is introduced. The application of the ethernet technology in the field of the embedded system is also presented. Then it detailedly describes the main features, pins descriptions, register descriptions of the 10 Mbps ethernet controller DM9008 and 10/100 Mbps ethernet controller AX88796. The design methods of the hardware interface between these two chips and the embedded processors are studied, and the programming methods of the base receive and transmit programs as well. To aim at the requirement of implement the ethernet communication in the embedded system, it introduces the format and the main feature of the frame of some basic network protocols from the view of software design, such as the protocols of ARP, IP and UDP.This paper proposes the design scheme between these two kinds ethernet hardware interface and embedded processors, which accords with the basic network protocols. It may be referenced for engineers.
