This paper is based on the case study of the successful operation and management of Harbin Metropolis News. It provides insight into some effective and practical ways to maintain competitive edge in the media industry. This paper is divided into two different parts, with the first part describing the case and the second part analyzing it. In the first part, a brief introduction to Harbin Metropolis News, its restructuring scheme, the implementation of the scheme and its performance after restructuring are demonstrated. In the second part, an in-depth analysis is made, by applying theories of strategic management, cost control and marketing, on the business environment the agency faces after its restructuring. To be more specific, the author uses SWOT to analyze and evaluate the agency's internal and external environment, its strengths and weaknesses, and the possible opportunities and threats it might face. The author then goes on to analyze the agency's cost control and offer possible solutions. Finally, the author analyzes and evaluates the agency's internal management mechanism. As the result of the above analyses and evaluations, countermeasures are suggested to promote the agency's core competitiveness after its restructuring, so that the success of Harbin Metropolis News may serve as a good example for other newspaper agencies.
