Natural Science Foundation System established mainly by National Natural ScienceFoundation of China (NSFC) and other government departments has played an important rolein Chinese basic research promotion and science development. In order to make the best useof foundation, foundation decision-making managers always need to analyze the scientificresearch products, including product quality and structure, fund investment and output, aswell as scientific research institutions comparison. However, traditional methods that onlysupport day-to-day business operations are difficult to achieve great volume of data analysisand information comprehension.In order to meet the demands of products analysis, this thesis integrates DW and OLAPto design and realize scientific research products multidimensional analysis system. Themajor completed works are as follows:(1) System structure is established based on B/S with four layers, in which "Bottom-Up"Products DW is designed based on the structure of products management department.(2) Multidimensional data model is given on the basis of the subject and angles thatmanagers focus on, including conceptual model, Logic model, physics model, hierarchies andpartitions in some dimensions. Additionally, data partitions, storage mode as well as virtualdimensions are designed in OLAP Server.(3) According to the previous idea, the system is realized using related technology,including Data extraction, transformation and loading, Data Cube and Front-end system. Asto the security, this system also creates different groups and roles for different users. Finally, apart of products data in General Projects from one of NSFC Departments are taken as anexample to illustrate the application of multidimensional analysis.The system supplies convenient analysis environment to obtain useful managementinformation by analyzing different project type, date, region, and applicant. It providesvisualization interface to present data from several kinds of views by Browser and flexibilityoperations of analysis multi-dimensional. It is a new attempt to apply DW and OLAP inChinese basic research, which will supply auxiliary support to potential knowledge mining.
