Power system stability is the key factor of the safe operation of network, which will cause enormous economic losses and calamitous consequence when it is destroyed. Excitation control system plays an important role in the safe operation of power system, but the problems in the excitation control system such as its robustness, fast response and efficiency are still not well resolved.This paper focuses on the research and development of the new excitation control system. It introduces the principle and application of the excitation control system firstly. Then it introduces the new way of control in this new designed excitation control system. At last, the design of software and hardware of the system is illuminated in detail. Excitation adjustor which can eliminate negative-damping is designed according to the oscillation mechanism of the synchronous machine and the factors which affect the excitation control. This excitation control system is mainly constituted with the following four function modules: hardware positive sequence filter, data sample, control arithmetic realization, thyristor trigger pulse realization. In the system, TI Company's 16-bit fixed-point DSP TMS320F240 is adopted as the main processing chip to realize the function of the system. The peripheral circuit of DSP chip and others function circuit are designed reasonably. In this control system, FPGA chip EPF10K20 of ALTERA Company is applied to control the time logic between DSP and expand device. EPF10K20 is also applied to produce the thyristor trigger pulse. The software is programmed with C and assembler language, which ensures that the software has clear structure and the short development cycle, at the same time, the high efficiency can be obtained.Through experiment, we have proved the perfect control effect of this excitation control system.
