Power system stability plays an important role in the safe operation of network, which will cause enormous economic losses and calamitous consequence when it is destroyed. There have been lots of bitter lessons existed in the world. Among these methods to improve stability of generators, one of the most efficient and economic way is to make the performance of excitation device better, which has been acknowledged generally. But the problems in the control system of excitation device such as its robustness, fast response and efficiency are still not well resolved.This thesis focuses on the application of the linear optimal excitation. On the base of researching the origination of the problem of power system stability and its principle mathematic analysis method and the effect to the stability of power system by excitation system, according to the theory of optimal control especially linear optimal control, for the special research object to power system, a linear optimal excitation system is designed, the means and steps to design this system is developed. The optimal excitation control law is an optimal linear combination of full state quantity, so it well conquers the weakness in the traditional control mode using single quantity of terminal voltage warp to adjust proportionally.The linear optimal excitation controller is simulated and tested, also analysis for the simulation is given. By the dynamic simulation analysis, this optimal excitation system can increase the system damping and improve system stability with very good robustness.
