As the basic control unit of electric power system, excitation system plays an important role in improving the reliability and stability of power system. The most economic measure to actualize stability of power system is advancing the performance of the excitation system. At present, it's hard for traditional testing equipment to test every aspect of the excitation system roundly, and for the requirement of modern technology development. So, it is imperative under the situation to develop new excitation testing system which has complete function and convenient operation for actualizing dynamic tests.This paper focused on the research of SMTS_RT simulation and testing system. In the paper we introduced the studying background of synchronous generator excitation real time simulation and testing system firstly. Then recited the basic conception and working theory, introduced the structure and application of SMTS_RT simulation and testing system, and designed the hardware interface aimed at actual excitation advice. Finally, established one-machine infinite power system's model and realized software simulation. In this way, performed real time excitation device testing and simulation. This real time simulation and testing system is conveniently taken, easily operated, has friendly interface and powerful function. With it, we resolved a series of problems in carrying out excitation device's parameter adjustment by traditional testing equipment. It is provided with superiority which other power system real time simulation and testing systems can not compared.In conclusion, we did simulation tests for the excitation system in this paper. As the result indicates that it is possible to use this simulation and testing system simulate and test actual excitation system. It is significant in enhancing the reliability and performance of excitation system.
