Future-proof metropolitan networks (MAN) must support today's access infrastructure at high bit rates with high reliability and able to flexibly adapt to evolving data traffic patterns. Service Providers require scalable optical metro platforms that can profitably deliver new broadband data services to meet the drastically increasing broadband data services so as to keep supporting cash revenues on traditional voice and leased-line services. From this point of view, current high-resilient-capacity SDH based MSTP (Multi-Service Transport Platform) technology is a good solution for Metropolitan Networks application. It makes Service Providers easier to build up a transport networks with cost-down and profitable solution and have complete coverage, manageable networks. The key point of MSTP is to have data-aware functionality of ATM and Ethernet based packet rings switching capabilities. MSTP equipment should have various Ethernet ports at bit rate of 10Mbps/100Mbps/1000Mbps so as to provide configurable broadband services. This dissertation generally describes SDH based MSTP applications and then introduces the design of one solution of Alcatel Shanghai Bell which can meet above market demand of MSTP facility, OptinexTM1662 SMC, a compact Optical Multi-Service Node equipment. Then we go to the detail development of one ISA-ES card. The dissertation is organized in four sections. In the first section general concepts of Metropolitan networks and MSTP are introduced. And then the brief discussion of SDH based MSTP: the basic technologies, evolution, application and progress of its standardization. In the second section key technologies of SDH based MSTP are described and introduced, such as Virtual Concatenation, Protocols of Ethernet over SDH, VLAN(Virtual Local Area Networks), MPLS(Multi Protocol Label Switch) and QoS mechanism, then summarization of MSTP.In the third section we introduce the developing project of OptinexTM1662SMC from the view of its market demand and top level design scenario. Then We mainly introduce the detail design of its key module, the development of ISA-ES cardIn the fourth section, the test of ISA-ES card is introduced. This paper has been instrumental in discussing several issues of SDH & MSTP applications and key technologies to realize Ethernet over SDH. Based on this, the author introduces one design project of ISA-ES card with some key components which are highly integrated ASICs. The target of this project is to develop one cost-effective card which can be industrialized and manufactured in mass production. The successful deliverable ISA-ES card leads to smooth release of whole system, OptinexTM1662SMC. As a compact solution for STM4/16 applications it enriches the OMSN (Optical Multi-Service Node) product families of Alcatel Shanghai Bell and provides more complete and competitive transmission networks'solutions to win more market share of MAN MSTP products. It is proved to be a practical solution with great commercial value.
