Syndication feeds have become a standard tool on the Web. RSS is one of theimportant applications of Web2.0 and Library2.0.Face the variety of new surrounding,the library want to keep its competitive advantage have to look for a new techniqueactively to improve the service competition of academic library. How to use RSS as anew technique to improve the service level of academic library has become a questionconsidered by librarian. As an information push standard, RSS will be used toimprove library service. Libraries must follow new technologies very closely and theadvantages of the newest innovations, such as RSS feeds, must be reflected in libraryservices. Now, RSS has promotes the ability of information service in library, andprovides various RSS feeds for user to obtain information. The paper introduces theRSS technology and its features, outlines RSS background and XML-based structure,then investigates and analyses the application of RSS in domestic and internationalacademic Library, and then describes it by using RSS technology library can bringvariety, convenient and speed information service in several aspects such as RSSnews alert, RSS Table of Contents (TOC) for Journals, RSS Book Lists, subjectinformation guide, digital reference service and so on.Then, the author explores fourproblems about RSS application in the academic library.The problems includes:tech-developing stuff not have enough RSS knowledge, the system data is hard towithdraw, the layer of RSS application is not enough and acceptability of RSS shouldbe improved. There are some measures to solve the problem and improve RSS service:enlarge development teams, cooperate with information system integrated corporation,develop as a library alliance and make RSS program wrap outside.In the end, theauthor predicts RSS future trend and estimates the RSS future development, includingRSS self-organization, integrated with OPAC in academic library and personalizedRSS.
