The Image-making Of College Students In News Reports

News reports are an important part of the information environment established by mass media. In order to represent the reality of the world, news discourse may form norms and set up consensus. The representation of one group of the society may also manifest the ideology established by news reports. Many researches show that this kind of representation may manipulate the public opinion and influence people's behavior. With the analysis to news texts my study describes the whole image of the college students with quantitative method, which is taken up in analyzing the discourse of the news reports to find the ideology and value under covered in them.As an essence group in the society, the college students and the image of them are always at the center of the people's attention, therefore, the image-making of college students in news reports is taken as the object for my study. College students are excellent in the youth. They are important carriers of the youth culture and pillar of the society. However, their development is associated with the development in many aspects, such as the nation, education, family and society etc. Showing their development and study their image-making in the news reports may be used as a reference in medium practice. Dealing with the relationship between the college students'image and news reports is concerned with the mass media's responsibility. Through the study, I find that six kinds of typical figures are portrayed in news reports in image-making of the college students: they are positive and negative in job reports; they are deeply interested in social activities and volunteer labour; they have open mind in sexual activities; they are weak in crime news, and the female college students are always negative. However, there are some differences between the news reports and the reality .The news reports does nor present college students real image. The discrimination existing in the mass media results in that stereotype and marginalization are the two main aspects of the discrimination that was produced by college students news worth and the deviation from news values.
