With the development of computer and autocontrol technology as well as the increasing of labor force, lots of unattended equipments have been used widely in industry, agriculture, environment and national defense domain, such as fixed transformer substation, floating transformer substation, oil extractor, generator set of diesel engine, hydrographic monitoring equipment and so on. It has the great significance for the national economy construction to make sure that these unattended equipments operate normally and safely. It is always a difficult problem to the users because these equipments' states are hard to be monitored and can't obviate the fault quickly since that the unattended equipments are located in lonely or widespread placed. With having analysised the advantages and disadvantages of remote monitoring technology and equipments, the remote monitoring technology for unattended equipment which is based on the GSM short message is proposed and a remote monitoring system for unattended equipment is designed according to the development of communication, computer and automatic monitoring technology.In this paper, the principle of GSM network and the short message technology is described and the agreement of the short messages is analyzed in detail. The total project of this system is proposed according to the characteristics and the function of remote monitoring for unattended equipments. The hardware and software of the modules of local monitoring, data reception and dealing of monitoring center are designed too.The parameters in working state of unattended equipment is collected, dealt and sent by local monitor module with ATmega128 acting as the kernel. In local monitor module, data is sent in PDU format which can support Chinese short message. The frame structure of correlative data is given. The encoding and decoding technology which is based on UNICODE is also carried out. With Visual Basic 6.0, the module of data reception and dealing of monitoring center is exploited. There are a lot of functions in this module, such as data reception, dealing, query, displaying the state of equipment, drawing the curve of simulation parameter, alarm and the transmission of short message.Through experiments and application, the remote monitoring system for unattended equipment is proved that it works reliably, has consummate function, and has powerful adaptability to environment as well as that it can give an alarm in time if there is an accident. So it meets the purpose of design. It also has an important effect in increasing the real-time of monitoring for the equipments, analyzing the reason of accident in time and advancing the working efficiency. This system is versatility and valuable for some areas, such as remote monitoring and data transmission.
