With the rapid development of communication technology, embedded technology,microelectronic technology and the science researchers’ intensive study on Internet ofThings, Wireless Sensor Network as an important part of Internet of Things meets newopportunities and challenges. The Wireless Sensor Network based on the physical layerand MAC layer of IEEE802.15.4with the characteristic of low price, low powerconsumption and high intensity has been successfully applied to all kinds of fields likepower grid, medical treatment, construction, highway and so on. We can achieve thegoal of connecting all things via the internet only the through IP-based wireless sensornetwork. Because of the limited IPv4address resource, it has been a trend to combinethe IPv6technology and IEEE802.15.4technology.6LoWPAN is the successful model of the combination of IPv6technology andIEEE802.15.4technology. However, the theory of6LoWPAN is still at the initial stage,the technical details and the realizability of the model also has certain problems. Thepaper mainly introduces the structure of protocol, the message format, segmentation andreshipment, header compression methods and the routing approaches of the6LoWPANtechnology. The paper focuses on the research and improvement of the message format,header compression approaches and the routing algorithm of the6LoWPAN technology.In the terms of header compression, in order to better apply6LoWPAN technologyto Wireless Sensor Network, the paper put forward the improvement ideas in the threeaspects of MAC layer header compression, adaption layer header compression and IPv6header compression on the basis of6LoWPAN header compression algorithm. We usethe software OPNET to set up the simulation system and analyze the simulation results.The simulation results verify the fact that the improved algorithm reduces the energyconsumption of the network, upgrades the performance of network survival time, packetloss rate and average end-to-end delay.In addition, the paper analyze the problems of LOAD routing protocol and HiLowrouting protocol that6LoWPAN put forwards. Based on the principle of extendingnetwork survival time, the paper proposes the idea of introducing cluster routingalgorithm into the6LoWPAN networks. In order to achieve the goal of reducing theenergy consumption and prolonging the survival time of the network, the paper focuseson the research of the optimal number of cluster head, the cluster head rotation time andthe unequal dividing cluster. Simulation results prove that the improved clusteringalgorithm can prolong the survival time of the network.
