When we develop the Garfield which is a chip used in handheld device, we encounter some design challenge in color LCD display. In this paper, we introduce two methods to optimize our design, one is LCDC optimization, another is dynamic backlight control technique.At first, the author introduce some background technology, such as the architecture of Garfield and two color space. Then the author optimize the LCDC by integrating the YUV to RGB convert circuit in LCDC. In the paper, the optimization technique is described and the evaluation is given. In order to reduce the power consumption of the display system, we bring forward two dynamic backlight control methods, one is dynamic backlight compensation, another is histrogram equalization. The theory of the technique and how to implement is described in the paper. At last we give the simulation results of the picture.By now, we have completed the optimization of LCDC. By integrating the convert circuit, the performance of MPEG4 decoding is improved by nearly 40%. And though two dynamic backlight control methods, the power consumption is greatly reduced. Using dynamic backlight control, we can reduce about 30% power consumption of the backlight.
