Nowadays, the TV technology and display technology have been improved rapidly. For it's small size, high display quality and low radiation, LCD display has become the mainstream of the display and has a huge development potential that it may replace traditional CRT color TV one day in the future. This paper focuses on developing a LCD display system based on the'format conversion chip'. The format conversion chip which is based on FPGA, is a combine of functional modules. It can realize the frame rate up conversion, the conversion of interlaced scan to progressive scan and dimension scaling. In this paper, a comprehensive solution based on this self-designed chip is proposed, and a LCD TV conversion card is designed to change the various video formats into a fixed data format which is accepted by a LCD panel. The core of the conversion card is the FPGA. Video source are connected to the FPGA via a digital decoder, VGA signals is connected to FIFO via an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) AD9883A, the signals from FIFO are then sent to the FPGA. The input signals are properly scaled by the video algorithms in the FPGA, and then they are outputted to the desired output resolution via the interface circuit. The core controller of the system is the FPGA, it can program the chips'registers via I2C bus to control the status of the whole system. In this paper, the circuits and the relative software are discussed detailedly. The final result of the debug proves that this solution is reliable and flexible, which becomes the base of the ASIC realization of the format conversion chip. The design and realization of the reuseable FPGA display system and the FPGA master I2C bus interface is the original work in this paper.
