The development of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has challenged the adaptability, flexibility and maintainability of traditional RFID applications, which brings the RFID middleware into being. It integrates edge readers into enterprise information technology system (IT) seamlessly through providing real-time, effective and reliable RFID tag information about items which improves productivity.Although RFID middleware can help in logistics, military, medical, retail, food security and other fields, it self has limitations. On one hand, massive raw tag data from edge are too simple for applications to use, more properties are needed; MQ on the other hand, as the information transmission layer doesn't scale well to support real-time inter-enterprise sharing of RFID data.To address functions and scalability issues of RFID middleware, this paper focus on recent research of high availability and scalability of RFID platform architecture which include multi-layer edge event filtering mechanism, complex event processing(CEP) on application level events(ALE) and inter-enterprise data sharing of complex event based on distributed p2p publish/subscribe systems,. Further more the design and implementation detail of a high-performance and scalable JTang RFID middleware prototype is presented.Chapter 1 gives an overview of RFID middleware. Also some related research work and existing RFID middleware products are given in this chapter, so that the research topic of this paper is proposed.In Chapter 2 the system framework of RFID middleware is introduced. By comparing and analyzing different architectures of typical RFID middleware, the architecture of JTang RFID middleware is proposed. Many efforts are put in order to improve the performance and usability of the system: CEP engine is introduced in the edge server to synthesis raw tag data to provide application oriented complicate event; On information sharing layer, the concept of RFID message adaptor is introduced so RFID event from different source can flow into a uniform pub/sub system based on topic so scaleable and efficient enterprise across information sharing is achieved. The whole system framework could meet the requirement regarding the functionality and scaleable of information process and sharing very well.Chapter 3 proposes detailed plans on integration of CEP and RFID event process including information transfer model and flexible rule definition of CEP. Chapter 4 gives distributed RFID information services model which provide RFID user-oriented event information in a real-time, effective and scalable fashion. Chapter 5 gives prototype implementation detail of proposed JTang RFID middleware platform.The last chapter summarizes the work in this paper, and proposes some future work.
