Abstract:The performance evaluation and analysis is one of the most important branches of computer sciences. In order to obtain the performance of a computer system, a lot of benchmarks were constructed. But there are no such a system which can evaluate the performance of operating system, calculate ability and applications. This paper first summarizes the existed benchmarks, based on that, it divides an evaluation system into three layers, which are operating system, calculate ability and applications. Benchmarks for every layer were constructed. It breaks the limit that benchmark can only evaluate the performance of one specify layer. It is the union of the three layer that the benchmarks constructed in this paper can not only evaluate the performance but also can hit the reasons of bottlenecks. So it will be useful to customers and computer manufactures. That is the biggest difference from the existed benchmarks. In this paper, based on lmbench which is a package evaluating the performance of operating system kernel. lmbench+ is constructed. It modifies many defects of lmbench. and two modules of summary and analysis are added. Lmbench+ can give simple and clear results, so it can be used by experts and beginners. After that a new benchmark package which evaluates the calculate ability called Calbench is constructed. It includes two modules, Calbench-Fixed Point and Calbench-Float Point. Followed that, AppBench which evaluates the application layer is introduced. In AppBench. the module evaluates the performance of Hmail Server named as DawnEmail2000 is first proposed by the author, and there is no congener software all over the world. In Appbench, the three layers are united, some formulae were obtained, from which, the bottlenecks of system can be found easily.
